PreP

What is PrEP?

  • Pre = Before
  • Exposure = coming into contact with HIV
  • Prophylaxis = treatment to prevent an infection.

PrEP is a daily (taken once a day) HIV prevention pill that's part of a comprehensive prevention strategy.

How effective is it?

PrEP is greater than 90% effective at preventing HIV. However, it does not protect against STIs or pregnancy.

How can I get it?

PrEP can be prescribed by any health care provider. Some or all costs of the medication can be covered by insurance, Medicaid, and patient assistance programs.
